Report
I recently attempted to register with this dental practice due to ongoing dental pain and because the location was convenient for me. After completing the online registration form I made an appointment. I initially booked an appointment, however a few days beforehand I phoned the practice to rearrange it due to worsening morning sickness caused by antibiotics I had been prescribed. I had already informed the practice during registration that I was pregnant and experiencing health issues.
I provided several days notice when rearranging this appointment, which was well within the practices stated 24-hour cancellation policy, so I did not believe there would be any issue. On the day of my rearranged appointment, approximately two hours before I was due to attend, I attempted to leave my home to go to the shops beforehand but became extremely dizzy and felt close to fainting not far from my house.
I am currently 9 weeks pregnant and this experience frightened me considerably. I returned home immediately and intended to contact my GP for advice. As soon as I felt well enough, I phoned the dental practice to explain the situation and apologise for being unable to attend (an hour before my appointment). I fully understood that cancelling at shorter notice may be inconvenient and I was genuinely sorry for this. However, during the call I was informed that I would no longer be allowed to register with the practice due to having two cancellations, despite the first rearranged appointment being changed with several days notice and fully within the practice policy.
While I accepted that this may be the practices policy, the way the situation was handled by the receptionist was extremely upsetting and in my opinion, highly unprofessional. During the call, the receptionist stated that I should not be making dentist appointments if I am pregnant and experiencing health issues. I found this comment inappropriate, judgemental, and lacking any compassion or understanding.
As an adult experiencing dental pain, I do not believe it is unreasonable to seek dental treatment during pregnancy. I also cannot predict sudden medical symptoms such as nearly fainting on the day of an appointment. The comment made to me felt dismissive towards both my pregnancy and my health concerns at a time when I was already distressed and unwell. This interaction has negatively affected me emotionally and caused additional stress during pregnancy.
I believe staff, particularly front-of-house reception staff, should receive further training in dealing with vulnerable or pregnant patients with empathy, professionalism, and understanding.
Ultimately, although I was disappointed not to be able to register with the practice, after this experience I no longer felt confident that I would be treated with appropriate care or compassion as a patient.
I appreciate that practices must have cancellation policies in place, especially when appointments are in demand. However, policies should still be applied with professionalism, empathy, and consideration for patients experiencing genuine medical issues. I phoned the practice as soon as I was physically able to after returning home and regaining my composure following the fainting episode, as I did not want the practice to think I was simply ignoring the appointment.
Throughout the call I remained polite, apologetic, and understanding of the inconvenience caused. My issue is not primarily with the cancellation policy itself, which I appreciate practices are entitled to enforce, but with the receptionists conduct and lack of compassion while speaking to a vulnerable pregnant patient experiencing a genuine medical issue. At no point was there any concern shown for my wellbeing.
I did not appreciate being spoken to in a reprimanding and judgemental manner by someone who is ultimately a stranger to me and not a medical professional responsible for advising me on when I should or should not seek dental treatment during pregnancy.
